Have you ever wondered why others tend to be nasty when your opinion or belief does not fit with theirs?

I have been wondering about this lately. Is this truly the type of world that we want to live in? When everyone must think the same just to get along? Is that even worth it? Do we still have humanity if we end up thinking just like everyone else?

What makes someone ‘truly human’? Is there even such a thing?
Martha Nussbaum on Capabilities
Martha Nussbaum feels that to be truly human one must be able to exists by a set of 10 points. Although she is writing from a political perspective, I find that her writings can be carried into many area of life.

One of those areas is the right to believe, feel and see things as one sees fit. I did not realize that someone would need to believe just like them to be accepted and liked.

Nussbaum’s 10 points are as follows:
1. Life. Being able to live to the end of a human life of normal length . . . ; not dying prematurely . . .

2. Bodily health . . . Being able to have good health, including reproductive health; being adequately nourished . . . ; being able to have adequate shelter . . .

3. Bodily integrity. Being able to move freely from place to place; being able to be secure against violent assault, including sexual assault . . . ; having opportunities for sexual satisfaction and for choice in matters of reproduction

4. Senses, imagination, thought. Being able to use the senses; being able to imagine, to think, and to reason–and to do these things in . . . a way informed and cultivated by an adequate education . . . ; being able to use imagination and thought in connection with experiencing, and producing expressive works and events of one’s own choice . . . ; being able to use one’s mind in ways protected by guarantees of freedom of expression with respect to both political and artistic speech and freedom of religious exercise; being able to have pleasurable experiences and to avoid nonbeneficial pain

5. Emotions. Being able to have attachments to things and persons outside ourselves; being able to love those who love and care for us; being able to grieve at their absence, to experience longing, gratitude, and justified anger; not having one’s emotional developing blighted by fear or anxiety. . . .

6. Practical reason. Being able to form a conception of the good and to engage in critical reflection about the planning of one’s own life. (This entails protection for liberty of conscience.)

7. Affiliation. Being able to live for and in relation to others, to recognize and show concern for other human beings, to engage in various forms of social interaction; being able to imagine the situation of another and to have compassion for that situation; having the capability for both justice and friendship. . . . Being able to be treated as a dignified being whose worth is equal to that of others.

8. Other species. Being able to live with concern for and in relation to animals, plants, and the world of nature.

9. Play. Being able to laugh, to play, to enjoy recreational activities.

10. Control over one’s environment. (A) Political: being able to participate effectively in political choices that govern one’s life; having the rights of political participation, free speech and freedom of association . . . (B) Material: being able to hold property (both land and movable goods); having the right to seek employment on an equal basis with others . . .

Nussbaum utilizes two qualifiers:
1.) They are a list of separate components. They are distinct in quality and all are of central importance.
2.) They are related to one another in complex ways that can only be discovered empirically.

She goes on further to say that all have to be satisfied equally and at the same time. One does not hold more importance than another.

However, in a world super-polarized by politics, economics, social class, education, employment, etc. many tend to forget that everyone has a right to their belief structure and opinion.

Russ God, I hate having to watch insecure people beg for votes, like they’re on ‘so, you think you can be more popular’ than the ‘more popular than you’ show for people who really really care about being popular. ‘Popular’ and ‘good’ aren’t synonymous. If y’all keep begging for the popularity contest votes, whining and pleading, as if making music has anything to do with popularity, I will vomit blood from the depth of my bleeding blackened heart for the death of metal indignation…. in short, I don’t give a shit who or what the fuck is ‘popular’ and even less of a shit how many fucktards think so…. begging for votes like some snotty shitfuck prom queen whore is like trying to win some assfuckbutthole-nussling Guitar Center contest to win a recording session with the devil, another bullshit popular asswipe that is as stupid as any other anthropomorphised fantasy god to be trying to be more or less ‘popular’ than. Fuck prom night…. this stupid shit makes me want to boycott any metal that smells like teen spirit and pull only the hardcore-est don’t give a shit about your fucking prom night fantasies punk bands out before throwing everything else down the popularity-show shitter… begging for popularity contest votes ain’t what I call ‘metal.’ It’s what I call ‘gay’ …..and I don’t mean ‘homosexual’ ….fuck metal if that’s what metal is about.

Russ ‎…and Truce singlr-handedly started the whole metal scene, huh? Gee, I didn’t know that. Thank god for Truce!!!

Tina  No Russ…quoting an old SLUG Mag article from back in the day when the Speedway was still up and going…thrashy style was pretty new and Truce took it to the extreme back then…However, cannot ever forget Mercenary! One of my favorites! 😀

Russ Oh there were a mega shit ton more than that and people who were artists, promoters, store owners, mag editors, radio dj’s, roadies, technicians, and fans who all started a fuckload of shit. It wasn’t Truce who dun it, baby! If ya gonna start root toot tooting about taking credit for other people’s sweat and blood, ya better be able to back it up!! It was not some kind of popularity contest, for some of us music was and is the key to all of it. I’m so thankful Truce was there to hold it all together for everyone else!!!

Tina  No one sad that Russ. They are just having some fun and talking with their friends. It isn’t like it is the rock and roll hall of fame or anything…but then again, they just let GnR in there…and I can’t figure that out for the life of me!

Tina  No one is saying that there weren’t more. I don’t have the time to list them all out. I know about the promoting, the stores, the calling, the running SLUG for print, getting passes made for the speedway, trying to keep gene’s gear running night after night behind the board…I was there, I remember, I worked with Zay through thick and thin…started with Gene at Studio 501…before the Speedway…I am very aware! We are talking about a band that is still together from the Speedway days…mostly original except for one member that tragically passed away. Truce had a lot to do with the Thrash scene and is one of the bands still kicking. That is all anyone is saying Russ…no one is taking anything away from anyone else. They just aren’t still together!

Tina  No one is Russ…only you by the looks of the facebook wall newsfeed. Not sure what is going on, but everyone is very aware. If individuals choose to post info from an old article in Slug people can and will do so. People are having fun, hyping their bands and putting the word out. No one is talking shit…wish I knew what had you really that upset. I appreciate your point, but don’t you think you may be blowing it a bit out of proportion?

Russ Don’t psychologize my shit 🙂 What’s really bugging me is stupid fucking bullshit, same as it ever was, dr. Tina… stupid bullshit. Quit it!

Tina  Russ then let it bug you. Sorry you don’t like the so called ‘popularity’ vote thing, but that is in SLC and you no longer are. If it bothers you that bad, then don’t pay attention to it. Some of the bands are having some fun, enjoy the engagement with others, and they seem to be having no problem with any of it at all. Just kind of confusing is all. Didn’t except this from you.

Tina  Russ, now now. Ya know that I think the world of you! Your insights are amazing and I have always found you truly interesting to listen to and engage in dialogue and discourse with. This just seems a little trivial, especially for you! You have so much to say, so much insight and so much truth in you…you have to admit, this seems a bit strange to champion as a cause! ;/

I find this all very confusing and I am saddened that this is what we have come to in our lives. That individuals cannot think, behave, rock out, feel or say what they choose to without becoming the targets of nastiness and hate.

Tell me, does any of this make sense to you? I am willing to listen!

All of this started over an online Facebook contest and a fan posting that they were voting for TRUCE because, in their opinion, they started the thrash scene in SLC. Maybe TRUCE did start the thrash scene for them…who knows! I just found this vindictive and nasty commentary sad from one who is considered a friend.
