I have come to the conclusion that most of us are lazy witches. Yes we are. We want everything to be quick and easy. We don’t want to spend a lot of time setting up elaborate rituals to do magick. We want it now! Or yesterday even.

Well I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that Candle Magick is quick and easy, the bad news is that you do have to do a little work..but not much!
One of the simplest of magical arts which comes under the heading of natural magic is candle burning, it can also be classified as sympathetic magic.I will explain that further in a bit.

candlemagick
Candle magic is simple because it employs little ritual and few ceremonial tools. The theatrical props of candle magic can be purchased at almost any store and its rituals can be practiced almost anywhere. Most of us have performed our first act of candle magic by the time we were two years old. Blowing out the tiny candles on our birthday cake and making a wish is pure magic. This childhood custom is based on the three magical principals of concentration, will power and visualization. In simple terms, the child who wants his wish to come true has to concentrate (blow out the candles), visualize the end result (make a wish) and hope that it will come true( will power).

Magic and Spell work as a whole all rely on these principals. Only the methods change based on how elaborate you want your working to be. So as lazy witches, candle magic combines the easy to do with the still very effective!

The size and shape of the candles you use is unimportant. What is important is that the candles you use for any type of magical use should be virgin, that is unused. Under no circumstances use a candle which has already adorned a dinner table or been used as a bedroom candle or night-light. There is a very good occult reason for not using anything but virgin materials in magic. Vibrations picked up by secondhand materials or equipment may disturb your workings and negate their effectiveness.

As a note here , this applies to the first working of the spell.. if you are doing the same spell for consecutive days then you put out and relight the same candle, usually until its gone or for as many days as the working requires.

The only exception to this is your God and/or Goddess candles on your altar if you have them. As long as they were dressed and dedicated to the Deities you work with. If for some reason you decide to honor different deities, then please change your candles.

Some of us who are artistically inclined prefer to make their own candles for ritual and magical use. This is a very practical exercise because not only does it impregnate the candle with your own personal vibrations, but the mere act of making your own candle is magically potent. Specialist shops, and craft stores sell candle wax and molds together with wicks, perfumes, and other equipment. Its a lot of fun but can be an expensive hobby. Look to the small witchy businesses that make a lot of their own candles.
(Shamless plug here.. Check us out athttp://wwwwytchydepot.com/shoppe we have a lot of great handcrafted and ritually aspected candles including some awesome skulls….)

All that aside..Purist will tell you to use uniform candles, and only shaped ones that are for specific things, like the skull shapes, or the male and female shaped, ect.. Well I am here to tell you a little different.

What kinds of candles can I use?

The beauty of candle magic is that you can pretty much use whatever you have. I have used those little birthday candles when that’s all I could find.

You can use tea lights, tapers, pillars, votives, jar candles ,chime candles and yes even those crazy shaped candles. You should pick a size that is appropriate to your working.. A quickie spell,, a tea light. A week long, then try a jar. You don’t want a way to big candle since you have to dispose of it.

A note on that: Never use the leftover candle or wax from a working candle for mundane things.. don’t take that jar candle you used to put a spell on someone as your bathroom night light! Once a spell or working is done you need to dispose of it properly. I have seen spells that say throw it away,or toss it over your shoulder at a crossroad. Well.. personally I don’t litter, and I don’t want any animal eating something that could harm them. So.. here is my take~ If the spell you are doing is for bringing good things to you, like money, health, happiness.. then bury it in your yard, or by your front door. You can wrap it in a scrap cloth and bury it . If you live in an apartment or other city area where you don’t have a yard.. bury it in a plant. If it is to send something away or to another , it needs to be off your property. Burying it at a crossroad is a good thing, but just somewhere off your property. It you have a target and can bury it on their property,, that’s even better!

Now back to the candles. As was said, online is a good resource. But so is Walmart, or Target,or drug stores or dollar stores. Yes some of them are less than ideal, but any port in a storm. Also said was intent. That is the right word! And will be covered in this lesson.
Hit whatever store you have around you.. buy up their clearance holiday stuff.. Grab that pumpkin candle, or the witch, how bout the Santa or elf.. all these can be used. Again purist say no.. I say , yes! And here is why.. there are many shaped candles that you can pay way too much for at specialty stores, use your imagination about these fun shaped ones. You may have read that they will distract you from your working.. I so doubt that, if you choose one that you identify with the working. For example.. If I was trying to bring abundance to my house.. why not use a Santa Claus candle… what better icon for giving and receiving..Part of todays homework will be thinking about all the fun shaped candles you have or have see and figuring out what kinds of workings they would be good for!

Now we all know Walmart has a candle section, and for votives and tapers and even some jar candles this is a good section. But don’t forget the isle with the glade type glass candles..Even the dollar stores and the drug stores are good for this.. but wait! You say they have fragrances.. Yes they do! And that can be a good thing. Just hang on…

First lets talk about color. Someone mentioned that you can use white in place of another color. This is true. Remember it is about intent and focus and will. Those tall jars you can get at the religious stores and sometimes even the plain white tall jars at the dollar stores.. stock up! Get em when they are on sale or cheap. When I had my brick and mortar store we bought plain colored 7 day candles for the most part. Then we turned them into working candles by creating our own labels. We did tarot candles with images of specific cards, we did rune candles, elemental sets and so much more. Once they were dressed and charged they were awesome. And I will teach you that as well.

There are many places to find color correspondence charts, I hope you have some but if not I am going to post the basics. However that being said, please don’t be the witch that freaks out about correspondences.. and not just with candles, with all your magic. It’s a guideline folks, not written in stone. All that wicca stuff that says “you must do this on this day with this stuff” bllaaaaa.. NO. If I had to wait for the right day, or the right moon or the right anything, nothing would ever get done! If you can wait, or do have the stuff.. it can’t hurt! But don’t let a book , or me or anyone tell you what you “have” to do. And please, use your gut, use and trust your intuition. That’s where the magic is,, in you!
